This is an example of a Sudbury Freemen’s Trust project which has been recently renovated. The project to mark the final resting place of remains from the Gainsborough family vault in the old Friars Street Congregational Church was carried out in July 1997. Twenty two years later the stone was almost hidden by grass and the inscription was difficult to read.
We are delighted to report that Neil Luxton, stone carver, of Gate House, Stour Valley Business Centre, Sudbury, has supplied a base and refurbished the existing memorial. Neil did this work for us simply for the cost of necessary materials; his advice and time are much appreciated. We are also grateful to Sudbury Town Council, who waived the usual cemetery charges. We would also like to thank the Moderator, Paul Whittle, and his staff at the Eastern Synod Office of the United Reformed Church for their support and help with our project.
