May 1st 2024 Turning On The Cattle Ceremony 10am by The Mill Hotel Sudbury

Wednesday 1st May will be another ‘Turning On Day’. The Sudbury Common Lands Charity has decided to hold this ancient ceremony on a more regular basis now that people are moving about more after the pandemic. This year in particular is appropriate since the Charity has a new Chairman – Freeman Nigel Eley (Parsonson family) together with a new Ranger and a new Assistant Ranger. The Mayor of Sudbury Cllr Jan Osborne has again invited two Freemen to act as Macebearers (Adrian Walters and Mrs Simonie Prior have ‘volunteered’). We have written about this event before on this site, so all we need to add is that all Sudbury Freemen are very welcome to attend to witness ‘their cattle’ being tuned on to pasture for the summer. You may even be called upon to ‘uphold support and maintain’ this particular custom (remember your Oath on Admission to The Freedom) or possibly just appear in the photos.
