Welcome from Linda and Kathy, Centre Coordinators
Well, we survived the storms and hope that you all came away unscathed by the recent torrential, unrelentless rain and high winds. Unfortunately, our lovely Grade 2 Listed building was not so lucky. You may have seen the very large puddle outside our building which, after traffic constantly going through it and spraying the building, the water has managed to damage internal walls and our lovely new carpet at the front of the building. Many people passing by were also showered by the inconsiderate actions of the drivers who could have avoided the puddle.
Despite the rotten start to the year weatherwise, we are very fortunate to have been chosen by Roy’s of Sudbury as their Charity of the Year meaning that for every carrier bag sold, The Centre get 10p, and as they say every little helps!! Or is that another retail store…?! Also, The Sudbury Community Depot have been chosen by Drage and Tozer Opticians of Sudbury as their chosen Charity of the Year.
We would like to thank Suffolk Community Foundation for their kind generosity, Councillor Osborne and Councillor Smith of Babergh District Council for generous locality donations. Thanks also to Tracey Cowley and Jo Batley for their wonderful donation after conquering Mount Kilimanjaro. We would also like to thank Goodchild Lime Plastering contractors for a swift and excellent ceiling repair and Good with Wood for the long-awaited repair on our very stiff front door and frame. We can all actually get in the building a little easier now!
As always, we thank our amazing volunteers and trustees for their ongoing support, we could not function without them.
We are pleased to say that all of our regular groups are now back to normal after the Christmas and New year break. Our Menopause Group will be back on Thursday 1st February and the Vegan Supper is also back on Friday 1st March. We are delighted to say that The Sudbury Gainsborough WI has recently joined us as a new group on the second Wednesday of every month. For details contact Gill McLay at firstname.lastname@example.org or call in to find out more.
The Christopher Centre is a thriving community hub where many local groups run their classes and activities. It is also a hub which provides a much-needed space for essential services to run, to serve the community in many ways including the NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Clinic, The Community Depot, The Drop in Monday Club, Turning Point for those affected by addiction, the Christopher Choir and the C’Art Group to name but a few.
As a charity, we are facing new challenges, as are most charities. With individuals facing ever growing bills and price increases, our donations are dwindling and our overheads rising. We have successfully increased our room bookings to help cover our overheads but to continue with the fantastic service we provide to so many people, we too will have to rely on the generosity of those that are in a position to support us.
We offer a number of rooms available to hire. We also house offices used by local voluntary and community organisations. Our room hire is available on an hourly basis, from £6 per hour.
We aim to continue bringing a friendly community approach to the people of Sudbury and surrounding areas, please contact us if you would like to visit with a view to hosting your group.
You can find us in Gainsborough Street opposite Gainsborough’s House. Why not come along say hello and have a look around?
